One hot summer, Dee disappeared. Now she’s back…but she’s not the girl you knew.

Sera and Dee were the best of friends.

Until the day that Dee and her brother Leo vanished from Sera’s life, during a long hot summer thirty years ago.

Now Sera is an adult, with her own child, five-year-old Katie, and has returned to her childhood home after her husband’s death.

While she grieves, the past haunts Sera at every turn … and then Dee and Leo return to their small Hampshire village, along with Dee’s young daughter.

But Dee is silent and haunted by her demons; no longer the fun-loving girl that Sera loved. And when Sera uncovers the shocking secret that Dee is hiding, it’s clear that the girl she knew is long gone – and that the adult she has grown into might put all of them in danger…

My Review

I Loved the overall plot and ideas for this book. There were so many secrets, suspense and mystery. There were many twists, turns and utterly shocking unfolding incidents and events throughout. And I was left absolutely gobsmacked at the revelations that I did NOT see coming at all.

It switches from the past and the present excellently well and built up the tension. Told from many of the characters points of view.

My favourite characters by far were Sera and Henri.

Sera which btw I love her name. connected with Sera straight away, she was a beautiful soul recovering from a traumatic time of losing her husband and she just wanted to go back to the good times within her childhood and have her best friend back. She was a wonderful protective mother and she only wanted to see the best in everyone.

Dee started off as a complex and interesting character clearly suffering from some form of mental health which I must congratulate Ella for representing really well. But soon she because irritating and many times I wanted to slap her. But I think this added to the suspense, tense and especially at the end made it become clear.

Henri was a damaged, scarred broken wounded soul and I loved seeing his and Sera relationship blossom. Henri is mysterious, Private and very hard to read person. This was my favourite part of the book.

Writing Style

Okay, I struggled a little bit with the writing, I don’t know it seemed at times mis mash, instead of letting us feel or think we were told far to much. And unfortunately, I was confused at some stages as the conversations didn’t flow perfectly well. But I think with maybe more work with an editor would be highly beneficial and would make this book top-notch.

I read this virtually straight through which believe me is hard with me. I lose concentration so much. But I had to know and find out what the hell was going on.

A beautiful stunning cover which highlights the story perfectly.

The Darkest Summer is an action-packed mystery suspend. Full of twist and turns with gobsmacking turns of events and revelations you will not see coming. This story is complexly interwoven with many subplots, lovable and hatable characters.
